What is miraDry®?

Miradry Philadelphia

Dr. Brenman is a board-certified plastic surgeon who is capable of performing a range of cosmetic procedures. However, he is also able to provide non-surgical treatments to target different bodily concerns. One condition he treats regularly is hyperhidrosis. This is an issue affecting around 3% of the population, and it is characterized by excessive underarm sweating. Naturally, this can lead to constant sweat patches under the arms, creating all sorts of concerns and triggering social anxiety.

Treatment for hyperhidrosis is available in the form of miraDry®. This treatment is extremely effective and can present the best results imaginable. It’s non-surgical, calling upon thermal energy to destroy the sweat glands under your arms, stopping you from sweating in this region.

What can miraDry® Treat?

As mentioned earlier, miraDry® can treat hyperhidrosis. It’s estimated that 2-3% of Americans suffer from this condition every single day. More sweat is produced from the glands under your arms than is considered normal – when compared to the general population. Specifically, you sweat a lot when you are barely doing anything. Sweating profusely when being active doesn’t count as this is considered a normal bodily reaction. If you’re sitting in the office and find your underarms are always sweaty, there’s a high chance you suffer from hyperhidrosis.

How is miraDry® Administered?

The miraDry® procedure is entirely non-surgical and only requires one appointment. A unique handpiece is used, attaching to the skin under your armpits. From here, it will do three different things:

  1. It lifts the skin upwards, forcing the sweat glands closer to the surface
  2. It produces a burst of thermal energy that targets the sweat glands, destroying them
  3. A cooling sensation is provided at the same time to reduce any discomfort and make the treatment as bearable as possible

That’s basically the entire treatment right there – it won’t take long, there’s no need for anesthesia, and it is relatively comfortable. Most patients will experience a slight tingling sensation under their arms while miraDry® is carried out, but it is not painful.

Benefits of miraDry®

This procedure is extremely beneficial as it can directly target the cause of hyperhidrosis. By removing the sweat glands from your armpits, it means you will no longer produce sweat in this area of your body. What’s more, it’s a permanent solution, so you don’t have to worry about the sweat coming back.

Furthermore, by using thermal energy and not including any surgery, the surrounding tissues aren’t damaged. Only the sweat glands are targeted, making it a safe treatment with minimal side effects. The biggest worry with this treatment is that it’s bad to remove your sweat glands. In reality, there are more glands all over your body, so you will still be able to sweat and control your body temperature. It’s just that now you won’t sweat under your arms and deal with constant sweat patches.

Am I a Candidate for miraDry®?

It can be hard to tell if you have hyperhidrosis or not. As a general rule, if you are sweating excessively without doing anything remotely strenuous, you probably have this problem. Or, if you are constantly self-conscious because of sweat patches, you may be a candidate for miraDry®. It’s a safe treatment, so the majority of people can undergo it without any health concerns.
